About Málaga: the back story

Málaga is Picasso’s birthplace and a city of museums: the Museo Picasso, the Pompidou, the Carmen Thyssen. The Alcazaba and Gibralfaro rise over the port and the old town.

Museums

Start at the Casa Natal on the Plaza de la Merced, then the Museo Picasso, and finish at the Pompidou on the port.

Old town and port

Walk up to the Alcazaba, then down to the Muelle Uno. The metro now reaches the centre at Atarazanas.

Picasso was born on the Plaza de la Merced in 1881; the house is now a museum.

Beyond the city

Antequera’s dolmens and El Torcal are inland; Nerja and its cave are to the east. For Marbella and the western Costa del Sol, see our Marbella guide.

Our advice: base yourself in the old town and take the train to the airport.
